Westfield House

Members from Memorial Lutheran Church have made several mission trip to Westfield House in Cambridge, England.  The purpose of these trips were to do repairs, renovations and deep cleanings to prepare a cleaner, cheerier and more functional place for students to work and live.

Westfield House, established in 1962, is the theological college of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of England (ELCE), a Lutheran church body which is in fellowship with the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LC-MS). It houses as many as sixteen students (and growing), both British pastoral ministry candidates and international students. Like everything else in England, it is a place of rich history, even once being owned by the nephew of Charles Darwin. The setting is beautiful. The gated grounds house not only the vine-covered, Victorian-style Westfield House, but the ELCE Central Office, Valparaiso University Overseas Study Centre and Resurrection Lutheran Church. This is all located in Cambridge, a lovely medieval town, and home of one of the two oldest English universities.

Westfield House is a valuable asset for the whole Church. This was recognized by a group which came to be named “Friends of Westfield House”.  This organization is dedicated to providing sufficient financial support to Westfield House with the main goal being the funding of theological education for African and Eastern European Lutheran churches. Indeed Westfield House has received students from every continent. Close to half of all pastors of the ELCE have been trained wholly or partly at Westfield House.
