Memorial Messenger
25 October 2013

With Thanksgiving just over a month away, we are looking forward to our annual Thanksgiving meal.  This special day allows us to serve the less fortunate, and we hope that you will consider signing up to be a part of it.  We at Memorial have been very blessed, and sharing our resources and faith are ways in which we can reach out and give someone else a reason to be thankful. "Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!"

(1 Chronicles 16:8)

From the Vicar
Thoughts on Thanksgiving
"Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures for ever! (Psalm 118:1). This past week I was walking past the choir room and heard the school choir practicing.  They were singing the Post-Communion Canticle, "Thank the Lord."  In the Canticle we sing about what God has done.  The Lord overfills our goblets with His mercy.  His mercy is a well that never runs dry. The mercy that spills from our Lord?s side as He hung on the cross fills our hearts with faith and thanksgiving.  We who are poor, miserable sinners are forgiven through Jesus Christ.  For this we are thankful!
Who's New?

Roselyn Begaye is originally from the northeastern Arizona portion of the Navajo Nation, where her extended family still resides. She and her daughter came to Houston five years ago by way of Providence, Rhode Island where her daughter Cadence was born. The Begayes feel very fortunate with the opportunities offered by this city; especially having been blessed with a church home such as Memorial Lutheran. The school is what initially attracted them to Memorial, when it was time for Cadence to start Kindergarten last year. But now they couldn't imagine one without the other, as Roselyn feels the church provides a strong foundation for the school and its students.  Cadence has really enjoyed her transition to Memorial and continues to thrive in the MLCS environment.

The Begayes are yet another family MLCS has been blessed to get to know. Welcome!
Thanksgiving Meal

Once again, we are asking for your help in serving our less fortunate brothers and sisters, in our greater Houston area this Thanksgiving Day.  We will need the help of the entire congregation in order to make this a success.  At Memorial, we have been abundantly blessed, and this is o

ne small way of sharing God's many blessings.  If you wish to volunteer in any capacity, make a donation, or want more information please see Wayne Murray at the table in the commons between worship services.  You may also contact Wayne or Arlene at home, 281 240 9644, or by email at wamurray9@hotmail.com.

Giving to the Less Fortunate

During our 5th annual Thanksgiving meal for the less fortunate, we will also be distributing much needed items to the attendees.  If you can help with any of the following items, please drop them off in the church office by Wednesday 27 November at Noon. Thank you!

Items we are in need of:

Tooth brushes & paste

Disposable razors

Shaving Cream

Adult sized jeans and clothing

Small bags of chips, cookies, snacks (individually packaged and sealed)

Final Sunday for Member Photos

Due to several requests, we are taking member photos between services in the commons one more Sunday on 27 October. Come have your family's photo and individual photos taken for our  directory and church database.  If you don't like your past photo or have never taken one before, this is your chance!

Look for the photo backdrop in the commons and smile for the camera.

If you have suggestions about things that should be in
you'd like to see in the Memorial Messenger, please let the office staff know. We would love to hear from you.

Communion Ware

The new communion ware is close to completion.  The new set will include two chalices, two patens, a ciborium, and a flagon. Ken Schmidt is hand forging the pieces out of Argentium silver, which is more tarnish resistant and stronger than other silvers.

Baptismal Font News

The Ecclesiastical Arts committee has been meeting to plan the bowl for the baptismal font.  They have been talking to Jim Bowman, a glass artist from Dallas.  Mr. Bowman is designing a glass bowl that will become part of our font and will have continuously flowing water in the font. This is "living water."
