Fifth Grade

Welcome to Fifth Grade! This is
an exciting and challenging year for our students as they begin
to transition from elementary school to middle school. Students
are given more responsibility with their studies and homework as
they prepare for Sixth Grade.
We have a comprehensive curriculum where our
subjects intertwine. For example, we have a science lesson on
oceans and waves while at the same time our history lesson discusses
how Magellan circumnavigated the Earth. Our history curriculum
covers the early explorers through 1815. Science, my favorite
subject, covers a variety of topics, not the least of which include:
fossils,oOceans, the body, and flight. We use the Shurley Method
for English grammar. This year we will expand our practice of
the different parts of speech and work on many different types
of sentence combinations. I encourage all our students to be good
readers. This year we will cover four novels in class and will
also discuss poetry, fairy tales and mythology. Outside of class
our students are required to complete four book reports, one each
quarter.
As a former Assistant Scoutmaster with a Boy
Scout troop, I feel it is necessary to "Be Prepared."
We try to help our students become more organized and ready for
what lies ahead. It is my goal that our students begin to take
the initiative with their study time and habits so that they are
ready for sixth grade.
